After undergoing brain surgery for 14 Hours and
while recovering from the operation in the 2nd week of my 4 week
stay in hospital I unfortunately suffered a major set back. I
had received a deep vein thrombosis which started as a blood clot
in my left leg and this travelled up to my lungs.
While receiving treatment for this set back little did I know
that the blood clot was to give me a 50/50 chance of living.
An appointment was made for me to see the
neurosurgeon in 6 month's time at the hospital in Bristol where
I was told that the operation was only partly successful. The
tumour that I had was called a menigioma and the main artery was
going right through the middle of it, Also various other nerves
had wrapped themselves around it. The neurosurgeon suggested that
I should receive some stero-tatic radiotherapy at the Royal Halisham
Hospital in Sheffield in 1997.
In the meantime after having 6 month's off
work I went back to work on light duties, I was so determined
that I went back running to keep up my fitness and it wasn't until
I received the radiotherapy that my body clock completely shut
down. The neurosurgeon reported a year later that the radiotherapy
had not diminished the growth that was left.
Since then I have undergone having 2 strokes
which has left me with a lot of weakness down my left side and
also partly sighted. I have for the last 12 month's been seeking
the help of a pain specialist where at one point I was taking
in the region of 40 tablets a day.
But through all this sadness that this has
brought to me and my family I bear no grudge or bitterness and
with time and the help that I can give to people suffering like
myself the Brain Tumour - South West Society can be set up.
